The Real Numbers - Men's suicide rates in New Zealand and Australia

Feb 07, 2023

Suicide is a major public health concern in New Zealand and Australia, and both countries have seen high rates of suicide among men in recent years. In both countries, men are three to four times more likely to die by suicide than women.

In New Zealand, the suicide rate among men has remained relatively stable over the past decade, with an average of around 500 deaths per year. In 2019, the suicide rate among men in New Zealand was 17.5 per 100,000 population, compared to 5.1 per 100,000 among women. The highest rates of suicide among men in New Zealand are among those aged 25-44 years and those in rural or remote areas.

In Australia, the suicide rate among men has also remained relatively stable over the past decade, with an average of around 2,500 deaths per year. In 2018, the suicide rate among men in Australia was 17.3 per 100,000 population, compared to 5.9 per 100,000 among women. The highest rates of suicide among men in Australia are among those aged 35-44 years and those in rural or remote areas.

Both New Zealand and Australia have implemented a range of strategies aimed at reducing the rates of suicide among men, including the provision of mental health services, the promotion of help-seeking behaviors, and the development of suicide prevention programs. However, much more needs to be done to address the root causes of suicide, including poverty, unemployment, and social isolation, and to ensure that all men have access to the support they need to stay safe and healthy.

It's important to note that suicide is preventable, and anyone experiencing suicidal thoughts or feeling overwhelmed should reach out for help. In both New Zealand and Australia, there are many resources available, including crisis hotlines, mental health services, and support groups.
